One cabinet, four very different jobs
A rosewood sideboard is bought for one of four jobs: dining service storage, entryway use, media equipment housing, or a lounge statement piece. Each job stresses a different part of the cabinet, and a specification that works for one can fail for another. Buyers who skip this step usually discover the mismatch after the container arrives: a dining sideboard with shelves too low for serving platters, or a media cabinet with no cable route.
Use-case requirements at a glance
| Use case | Deciding factor | What to confirm in writing |
|---|---|---|
| Dining service | Shelf clear height, drawer depth | Internal clear height vs your platters and glassware; fixed or adjustable shelves |
| Entryway console | Hardware and surface wear | Wooden vs concealed hinges; top overhang profile |
| Media / AV | Cable routing, ventilation, heat | Cable grommet positions; ventilated back panel option; equipment depth limits |
| Lounge statement | Surface durability | Hot-plate and alcohol resistance expectations; finished sample panel for testing |
What the site's own cabinet range shows
The site's sideboard is a solid Siamese rosewood piece, 140 × 45 × 85 cm, with hand-cut dovetail drawers, a hand-carved apron, mortise-and-tenon joinery and a seven-coat raw lacquer finish. The 100 × 40 × 180 cm display cabinet with carved lattice doors serves the lounge and showroom job. For AV use, the 45 cm depth accommodates standard AV receivers, but confirm exact equipment depth and the grommet layout before production starts.
Ordering sequence that avoids rework
- Decide the use case first, then the model, then the finish confirmation.
- For AV: send equipment dimensions and let the factory mark grommet positions on a shop drawing.
- For dining: send your largest serving piece's dimensions and confirm internal clear heights against them.
- For lounge or bar use: request a finished offcut panel and run your own hot-cup and alcohol-wipe test before signing off the finish.
