Hand-Carved Lattice Door Panels

The two cabinet doors feature traditional Chinese lattice geometric patterns, hand-carved in medium relief. The lattice grid consists of interlocking diamond motifs that create visual interest when viewed from different angles and cast decorative shadows when interior lighting is installed. Each door panel requires approximately 20 carving hours. The carver uses chisels ranging from 2 mm to 10 mm width, with the interlocking joints being the most technically demanding element because each intersection must be cut precisely to create a clean, tight fit without gaps.

Floating-Panel Construction

The cabinet side panels and back panels are constructed using traditional floating-panel technique. The panel edge is shaped into a tongue that fits into a corresponding groove in the frame, allowing the panel to expand and contract with humidity changes without cracking or pushing the frame apart. This technique is essential for furniture exported to climates with significant humidity variation between seasons.

Manufacturing Workflow

This cabinet follows a five-stage production sequence:

• Stage 1 - Timber Heartwood Selection: Siamese rosewood boards are inspected for heartwood ratio. Only boards with a heartwood percentage exceeding 80 percent proceed to this product line, since heartwood holds carving detail more cleanly and resists dimensional movement.

• Stage 2 - Kiln Conditioning: Selected timber is kiln-dried to 8 to 12 percent moisture content over a 4-week cycle with gradual temperature ramping. A 48-hour equalization period follows to relieve internal stresses.

• Stage 3 - Frame Joinery and Floating Panels: Mortise-and-tenon joints are cut to 18 mm tenon depth on rails and 16 mm on stiles. Floating panels are sized with a 4 mm expansion gap on each side to accommodate seasonal wood movement. Corner blocks are installed at every right-angle intersection.

• Stage 4 - Lattice Carving: Door lattice panels are carved after frame assembly. The carver works from a reference drawing but adjusts the lattice intersections to the grain of each board, ensuring structural integrity at each joint.

• Stage 5 - Seven-Coat Lacquer Finishing: Seven coats of raw lacquer are applied by hand, each cured for 24 hours and rubbed with pumice stone. The final coat achieves a deep satin sheen that highlights the lattice carving depth.

Quality Inspection

• Heartwood Ratio Verification: Each board is visually inspected for sapwood percentage. Boards exceeding 20 percent sapwood are diverted to other product lines.

• Joint Stress Test: Assembled cabinet frames are loaded with 80 kg of distributed weight for 24 hours. Any joint showing visible separation is re-fitted.

• Floating-Panel Movement Check: Panels are inspected for free movement within the frame groove. Any panel that binds is re-sized.

• Carving Depth Check: Lattice relief depths are verified with a depth gauge at five points per door panel.

• Moisture Audit: Three-point readings per cabinet. Readings outside 8 to 12 percent require re-conditioning.

The hand-cut half-blind dovetail drawers are inspected at the same station: pin-to-tail ratio is checked at 1:6, and each drawer is slid through twenty full open-close cycles to confirm smooth travel without binding.

Export Packaging and Documentation

The cabinet is wrapped in acid-free tissue paper and corrugated cardboard, then packed in an ISPM-15 heat-treated wooden crate with EPS foam corner blocks. Gross weight per crate is approximately 75 kg. Every shipment includes CITES export permits, FSC chain-of-custody certificate, commercial invoice with HS code 9403.60, and a wood drying certificate.
