Hand-Cut Dovetail Drawer Construction

All six drawer boxes use hand-cut through-dovetail joints at the front corner and half-blind dovetails at the rear. The dovetail pins are cut at a 1:6 ratio, which is the traditional Chinese furniture standard for hardwood drawers. Drawer bottoms are set in grooved sides and slide on wooden runners, not metal slides. This construction method allows the drawer to be repaired without disassembling the sideboard case.

Hand-Carved Apron and Base Detail

The sideboard features hand-carved auspicious motifs on the apron above the lower doors and along the bottom base. The carving is executed in medium relief at 2-4 mm depth, with the background recessed to create visual depth. Each sideboard requires approximately 25 carving hours. The carver uses chisels ranging from 2 mm to 10 mm width, with the flowing cloud and floral curves being the most technically demanding elements.

Manufacturing Workflow

This sideboard follows a five-stage production sequence:

• Stage 1 - Timber Heartwood Selection: Siamese rosewood boards are inspected for heartwood ratio. Only boards with a heartwood percentage exceeding 80 percent proceed to this product line.

• Stage 2 - Kiln Conditioning: Selected timber is kiln-dried to 8 to 12 percent moisture content over a 4-week cycle with gradual temperature ramping. A 48-hour equalization period follows.

• Stage 3 - Frame Joinery and Dovetail Drawers: Mortise-and-tenon joints are cut to 18 mm tenon depth on rails and 16 mm on stiles. Drawer dovetails are cut by hand at a 1:6 ratio. Corner blocks are installed at every right-angle intersection.

• Stage 4 - Apron and Base Carving: Auspicious motifs are carved after frame assembly. The carver works from a reference drawing but adjusts the motif to the grain of each board.

• Stage 5 - Seven-Coat Lacquer Finishing: Seven coats of raw lacquer are applied by hand, each cured for 24 hours and rubbed with pumice stone. The final coat achieves a deep satin sheen.

Quality Inspection

• Heartwood Ratio Verification: Each board is visually inspected for sapwood percentage. Boards exceeding 20 percent sapwood are diverted to other product lines.

• Dovetail Fit Check: Each drawer is cycled 50 times on its runner. Any drawer binding or loosening is re-fitted.

• Joint Stress Test: Assembled sideboard frames are loaded with 60 kg of distributed weight for 24 hours. Any joint showing visible separation is re-fitted.

• Carving Depth Check: Relief depths are verified with a depth gauge at five points per panel.

• Moisture Audit: Three-point readings per sideboard. Readings outside 8 to 12 percent require re-conditioning.

Export Packaging and Documentation

The sideboard is wrapped in acid-free tissue paper and corrugated cardboard, then packed in an ISPM-15 heat-treated wooden crate with EPS foam corner blocks. Gross weight per crate is approximately 65 kg. Every shipment includes CITES export permits, FSC chain-of-custody certificate, commercial invoice with HS code 9403.60, and a wood drying certificate.
