Buyer Pain Point and Our Solution

The pain point: a reception set that looks right in the showroom but arrives with carving that reads flat and joints that loosen in a climate-controlled lobby. Hospitality and corporate reception buyers specify carved rosewood for cultural prestige, then discover two problems after installation. First, carving depth varies between pieces because panels are cut from boards with different sapwood content, so the phoenix motif on one armchair sits shallower than on the sofa beside it. Second, a lobby that runs air conditioning in summer and heating in winter swings in relative humidity, and seat rails that were tight at delivery develop visible gaps at the joint line within the first heating season.

What that costs the buyer. A reception area is the first thing a guest sees, so inconsistent carving is a visible defect that triggers a rework or replacement claim against the contractor. Joint separation is worse: it is a structural complaint on a piece the client expects to last decades, and it usually surfaces after the project has been signed off, when the contractor carries the cost of a site visit, a repair, or a full replacement.

Our solution: heartwood-graded panels for carving consistency, plus a moisture-conditioned frame and a tested joint. Every board is inspected before it enters this product line, and only boards with a heartwood ratio above 80 percent are used for the carved backrest panels, because heartwood holds a cut edge more cleanly than sapwood. The timber is then kiln-dried over a 4-week cycle with gradual temperature ramping, followed by a 48-hour equalization period, so the frame reaches the workshop at a stable moisture level rather than drying further after assembly. Seat rails and backrest stiles are joined with 18 mm and 16 mm mortise-and-tenon joints, bamboo dowel pins are fitted dry before glue application, and corner blocks are installed at every right-angle intersection.

How we verify it. Assembled frames are loaded with 120 kg of distributed weight for 24 hours; any joint showing visible separation is re-fitted before finishing. Carving relief depth is checked with a depth gauge at five points per panel against the three specified stages (2 mm shallow, 4 mm medium, recessed background), with a working tolerance of plus or minus 0.5 mm. Moisture is read at three points per piece against a target of 8 to 12 percent and a ceiling of 14 percent; any piece reading above 14 percent goes back for re-conditioning. Finish colour is compared across all six pieces against a reference panel under 5000K LED lighting. The results are recorded per piece and issued as a PDF inspection sheet with the shipping documents, covering moisture readings, joint load test, and carving depth.

What you get. Six pieces whose carving depth and colour match each other on arrival, a frame that was joined at a controlled moisture level rather than at whatever the workshop ambient happened to be, and a per-piece inspection sheet you can pass to your client if the joinery is questioned. The set ships in three crates totalling roughly 1.6 cubic metres, which keeps a single-set order LCL-compatible.

Six-Piece Configuration

  • 1 three-seat central sofa (195 cm length, 66 cm depth, 94 cm backrest height)

  • 2 single-seat armchairs (66 cm width each)

  • 1 matching coffee table (115 x 60 cm)

  • 2 matching end tables (48 x 48 cm each)

Seating capacity is five: three on the central sofa and one in each armchair. The coffee table and two end tables complete the six-piece set. For buyers furnishing L-shaped reception areas, the two armchairs can be angled independently from the central sofa. Mention the room layout when requesting a quotation so we can confirm the configuration works for your space.

Phoenix-and-Peony Backrest Carving

The backrest panel on each seating piece features a phoenix flying among peony blossoms, a classical Chinese motif symbolizing beauty and nobility. The carving sequence involves three steps: the phoenix body is outlined first in shallow relief at 2 mm depth, the peony blossoms are carved in medium relief at 4 mm, and the background is recessed to create visual depth. Each backrest panel takes approximately 35 carving hours on average, measured across the panel only and excluding sanding and finishing. The carver uses chisels from 2 mm to 14 mm width, and the phoenix tail feathers are the most technically demanding element because they require continuous flowing cuts along the grain.

Manufacturing Workflow

This set follows a five-stage production sequence with a distinct carving-intensive workflow:

  • Stage 1 - Timber Heartwood Selection: Siamese rosewood boards are inspected for heartwood ratio. Only boards with a heartwood percentage exceeding 80 percent proceed to this product line, since heartwood holds carving detail more cleanly than sapwood.

  • Stage 2 - Kiln Conditioning: Selected timber is kiln-dried over a 4-week cycle with gradual temperature ramping to avoid case-hardening, targeting 8 to 12 percent moisture content with a ceiling of 14 percent. A 48-hour equalization period follows.

  • Stage 3 - Frame Joinery: Mortise-and-tenon joints are cut to 18 mm tenon depth on seat rails and 16 mm on backrest stiles. Bamboo dowel pins are fitted dry before glue application. Corner blocks are installed at every right-angle intersection.

  • Stage 4 - Three-Step Relief Carving: Phoenix-and-peony panels are carved in three depth stages after frame assembly. The carver works from a reference drawing but adjusts feather flow and blossom placement to the grain of each board.

  • Stage 5 - Eight-Coat Lacquer Finishing: Eight coats of raw lacquer are applied by hand, each cured for 24 hours and rubbed with pumice stone. The final coat achieves a deep satin sheen that highlights the carving relief.

Quality Inspection

  • Heartwood Ratio Verification: Each board is visually inspected for sapwood percentage. Boards exceeding 20 percent sapwood are diverted to other product lines.

  • Joint Stress Test: Assembled frames are loaded with 120 kg of distributed weight for 24 hours. Any joint showing visible separation is re-fitted.

  • Carving Relief Depth Check: The three-step relief depths (2 mm, 4 mm, recessed background) are verified with a depth gauge at five points per panel, working tolerance plus or minus 0.5 mm.

  • Moisture Audit: Three-point readings per piece against a target of 8 to 12 percent and a ceiling of 14 percent. Any piece reading above 14 percent requires re-conditioning.

  • Finish Uniformity: The lacquer surface is inspected under 5000K LED lighting. Colour consistency across the six pieces is verified against a reference panel.

Enterprise Capability

Yunxiao Rosewood Furniture Co., Ltd. has produced classical redwood furniture in Xianyou since 2008. The workshop holds FSC chain-of-custody certification and is registered for CITES export permits covering Dalbergia cochinchinensis. OEM carving customization and ODM design development are supported with a 15-day design approval cycle. Production capacity, employee count, and client references are available upon request.

Export Packaging and Documentation

Each piece is wrapped in acid-free tissue paper and corrugated cardboard, then packed in an ISPM-15 heat-treated wooden crate with EPS foam corner blocks. The full set fills three crates with a combined gross weight of approximately 180 kg and a total volume of roughly 1.6 cubic metres. Shipments are accompanied by CITES export permits, an FSC chain-of-custody certificate, a commercial invoice with HS code 9403.60, and a wood drying certificate. Dalbergia cochinchinensis is listed in CITES Appendix II, so an import permit issued in the destination country is also required; buyers should confirm the permit lead time with their customs broker before fixing a delivery date.

Reception-area installation note

The 195 cm central sofa is designed to be the visual anchor of the set. Position it against the tallest wall in the reception area so the 94 cm backrest carving is visible at eye level when guests enter the room. The set is delivered assembled; no on-site joinery work is required. Wipe the raw lacquer surface with a soft dry cloth, keep the pieces out of direct sun and away from heat sources, and maintain indoor relative humidity in the 40 to 60 percent range to limit seasonal movement of the solid wood panels. Check the delivery route before ordering: the central sofa is the largest single piece, so confirm that the entrance, corridor, and lift can pass it, and that the floor can carry the loaded weight.
