Cloud Apron Carving Detail

The apron beneath the tabletop features a traditional Chinese cloud motif, hand-carved in shallow relief at 2-3 mm depth. The cloud pattern symbolizes good fortune and continuity in Chinese culture. Each apron section requires approximately 12 carving hours. The carver uses chisels ranging from 2 mm to 8 mm width, with the flowing cloud curves being the most technically demanding element because they require continuous, smooth cuts along the grain to create the characteristic swirling shape without splintering the dense rosewood.

Curved Leg Construction

The four table legs are shaped with a gentle S-curve in the cabriole style, a classical Chinese curved-leg form adapted in this design for visual elegance and efficient weight distribution. Each leg is carved from a single piece of solid rosewood, with the curve following the natural grain direction to maintain maximum strength. The leg-to-apron connection uses a 16 mm mortise-and-tenon joint reinforced with bamboo dowel pins, ensuring the table can support the weight of a full tea set and withstand the lateral force of daily use.

Manufacturing Workflow

This tea table follows a four-stage production sequence:

• Stage 1 - Timber Heartwood Selection: Siamese rosewood boards are inspected for heartwood ratio. Only boards with a heartwood percentage exceeding 80 percent proceed to this product line, since heartwood holds carving detail more cleanly and resists dimensional movement in overseas climates.

• Stage 2 - Kiln Conditioning: Selected timber is kiln-dried to 8 to 12 percent moisture content over a 4-week cycle with gradual temperature ramping to avoid case-hardening. A 48-hour equalization period follows to relieve internal stresses.

• Stage 3 - Frame Joinery and Floating Tabletop: Mortise-and-tenon joints are cut to 16 mm tenon depth on the apron-to-leg connections. The tabletop panel is fitted as a floating panel within the frame, allowing seasonal expansion and contraction without cracking. Bamboo dowel pins reinforce all joints.

• Stage 4 - Cloud Apron Carving and Six-Coat Lacquer Finishing: The cloud motif is carved after frame assembly. Six coats of raw lacquer are then applied by hand, each cured for 24 hours and rubbed with pumice stone. The final coat achieves a deep satin sheen that highlights the cloud carving depth and the natural rosewood grain.

Quality Inspection

• Heartwood Ratio Verification: Each board is visually inspected for sapwood percentage. Boards exceeding 20 percent sapwood are diverted to other product lines.

• In-House Load Check: As part of routine outgoing inspection, each assembled table is loaded with 60 kg of distributed weight for 24 hours. Any joint showing visible separation is re-fitted. This is an internal factory inspection procedure rather than a certified laboratory test; third-party test arrangements can be discussed at the inquiry stage.

• Floating-Panel Movement Check: The tabletop panel is inspected for free movement within the frame groove. Any panel that binds is re-sized.

• Carving Relief Depth Check: Cloud apron relief depths (2-3 mm shallow relief) are verified with a depth gauge at five points per apron section.

• Moisture Audit: Three-point readings per table. Readings outside 8 to 12 percent require re-conditioning.

Care and Maintenance

The following are general care guidelines for solid rosewood furniture with a raw lacquer finish. They are based on the materials used in this table (solid Dalbergia cochinchinensis and hand-rubbed raw lacquer) rather than model-specific test data:

• Dust regularly with a soft, dry cotton cloth. Wipe along the grain. For fingerprints or light smudges, use a cloth wrung out in clean water and dry the surface immediately; do not leave standing water on the lacquer.

• Avoid chemical and abrasive cleaners. Alcohol-, ammonia-, or silicone-based sprays and scouring pads can dull or cloud a raw lacquer surface. Warm water on a soft cloth is sufficient for daily cleaning.

• Keep the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Prolonged exposure to direct sun, radiators, or air-conditioning outlets can dry the wood unevenly. Placing hot teapots directly on the surface is not recommended; use trivets or coasters.

• Maintain indoor relative humidity around 40-60%. This is the same range recommended for the floating-panel structure; in very dry or humid seasons, a humidifier or dehumidifier helps keep wood movement within the panel's expansion gap.

• Use felt pads under decorative objects and lift rather than drag items across the surface to protect the lacquer sheen and the carved apron edges.

Export Packaging and Documentation

The tea table is wrapped in acid-free tissue paper and corrugated cardboard, then packed in an ISPM-15 heat-treated wooden crate with EPS foam corner blocks.
